Bytown Evolution: Train to Race


A Competitive Dragon Boat Kick Start Program

Bytown Dragon Boat Club sponsors this 16 week program, focused on training and racing:

  • We will introduce you to the ins and outs of competitive dragon boat

  • Gel with a crew of 22 fitness-focused paddlers that aim to improve and get faster every practice


Practices: 1 hour practices, Tuesday and Thursdays 8pm​ 

16 weeks mid-May to end of August

Practices launch at the Rideau Canoe Club, on the Rideau River. 

Enjoy long summer evenings refreshed by the river!

Racing: Two festivals. One in June and a final competition at the end of the summer

Participants may paddle with other crews at the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival, this will not be one of our festivals.​

Cost: $275 All-inclusive, includes:

  • Two practices per week

  • Entry and racing at two dragon boat festivals / competitions

  • Team Uniform

  • Bytown Dragon Boat Club Membership

Note: Participants will need to register as Dragon Boat Canada members (~$25) to compete in the Sports divisions at festivals.​​​​

Who: Recreational paddlers or fit adults interested in trying competitive dragon boat without full commitment of our competitive crews

  • Premier Mixed: men and women aged 24+​

  • Senior Mixed: men and women aged 39+

This program is a bridge for recreational paddlers or fit adults to prepare them to train and compete with a competitive dragon boat crew.

Competitive Dragon Boat

    • New members may join our competitive crews throughout the year​

    • Some of our crews are competing at the Club Crew World Championships in Sarasota, FL in July 2022

    • Who: Experienced paddlers or competitive individuals in the following divisions:

      • U24: ages 18-24​

      • Premier: All ages

      • Senior A Women (aged 39+)

      • Senior B Women (aged 49+)

      • Senior B Men (aged 49+)

      • Senior C Women (aged 59+)

      • Senior C Men (aged 59+)

    • Cost: Varies by division according to the practice choices and festivals

    • What's involved:

      • ​3-4 practices per week plus off-water training

      • Racing at 4+ festivals in Ottawa, Montreal, and abroad

      • Winter training: fitness training, pool paddling​​​​
